Review: Mimolette

I really like this restaurant for two, no, three reasons. Its near my home, its in an unexpected location and its got incredible french toast.

The restaurant is located in Fairway Drive, behind the Green Fairways driving range and the Saddle Club. To reach the restaurant, basically you drive down this little windy road that starts from the Pan Island Expressway exit off Eng Neo Avenue and continue into a narrow one-way road and through a bridge. There's a bit of sense that you're visiting the Hobbits at this point.

It reminds me of driving to the ranch in University, how you had to sort of drive toward the highway, the open space, the stables. I love that you can bring your kids here and they can visit the horses after the meal. You're practically parking (in their very spacious open-air carpark) amongst horses.

The restaurant is like a converted barn, whitewashed, hung with fun chandeliers (isn't every joint in town nowadays), fitted with a snazzy red door and vaudeville lettering, sort of reminiscent (but only dimly) of Balthazar in New York. It has a seperate area that acts as a bar/lounge and outdoor seating. The greenery that surrounds the restaurants makes it a really pretty spot during the day but especially at night when I've heard they run fairy lights through the trees.

Unfortunately, the restaurant didn't allow any pictures of the food, given that they haven't formally launched the restaurant. I haven't yet gone at night, partially because I've heard that the food is much better during the day.

We had a Eggs Benedict, the large breakfast with a fry-up of sausage and scrambled egg, a salad, pancakes and french toast. The food and cooking was competent. The French Toast was beautiful but small. My friend thought the Eggs Benedict was one of best she'd eaten, I felt it was slightly dry and I've had better in NYC. They wouldn't let us take pictures of the food because the restaurant hasn't yet officially launched, so the picture of the menu was the only photographic highlight.

Worth the trip. Especially if you need a quiet, quaint place to have an early meal.
