Review: Sun with Moon

Have a number of reviews to do since I've been eating out a lot now that I'm on holiday. Met up with some old friends lately at the fashionable Sun with Moon Japanese cafe at Wheelock Place. Oddly enough, given my dislike for Japanese food, this is the first Japanese eatery to be reviewed on this blog, which I think is something special, don't you?

Restaurant Calligraphy

The restaurant is very soothing in a zen kind of way, with a fair bit of dark wood, and mellow lighting, as well as what may be badly-translated Japanese poems adorning the ceiling.

Sun with Moon

Even though Sun with Moon is very large, occupying three shop spaces, such is the popularity of the restaurant that diners still need to queue to get in. I attribute this to the good ambience and the speed of service, something other Japanese eateries tend to lack.

Niku Udon

I had a bowl of Niku Udon ($10.80), which is basically beef noodles. I've steered clear of udon ever since a very unpleasant episode at Tokyo Airport where a bowl of udon just wouldn't stay down. Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed this one, as I was looking for a filling yet light meal, something a bowl of soupy noodles provided.

Salmon Avocado

We shared an order of pseudo-sushi: pieces of avocado wrapped in salmon sashimi, topped with mayonnaise and salmon roe ($8.50). This was pretty good, even though I'm not very partial to sashimi. Avocado and salmon roe always work well together, and the soft salmon flesh is easily palatable.

Sake Chazuke

Jocelyn had some grilled fish with a sort of green tea soup, which she assured me was not particularly appetising.

Sukiyaki

Natalie's Sukiyaki was not much better, though it did come in a very nice ceramic hotpot adorned with numerous Japanese characters.

Chocolate Parfait

Dessert was a chocolate parfait ($9.80) affair, entirely unremarkable apart from the appetising presentation.

Sun with Moon is conveniently situated in Wheelock Place, so if you get tired of browsing in Borders it's a simple matter of taking the escalator up for some Japanese dining. While the food is more aesthetic than appetising, the casually mellow ambience is a plus, evidenced by the trendy crowd that never seems to keep coming.
